Reading

  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Format (Academic): Three long texts ranging from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical.
  • Format (General Training): Extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements, company handbooks, and guidelines.
  • Skills Tested: Reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical argument, and recognizing writers’ opinions, attitudes, and purpose.

Writing

  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Format (Academic):
    • Task 1: Describe visual information (graphs, charts, maps).
    • Task 2: Write an essay responding to a point of view, argument, or problem.
  • Format (General Training):
    • Task 1: Write a letter requesting information or explaining a situation.
    • Task 2: Write an essay responding to a point of view, argument, or problem.
  • Skills Tested: Ability to write a clear, relevant, well-organized argument, and to describe or summarize visual information.

Speaking

  • Duration: 11-14 minutes
  • Format: Face-to-face interview, consisting of three parts:
    • Part 1: Introduction and interview (4-5 minutes)
    • Part 2: Long turn (3-4 minutes) – Speaking about a particular topic.
    • Part 3: Discussion (4-5 minutes) – More abstract discussion related to the topic in Part 2.
  • Skills Tested: Ability to communicate opinions and information on everyday topics and common experiences and situations by answering a range of questions.
